such there is no amount of nicotine consumption per day which leads
to nicotine dependence and cigarette withdrawal symptoms, in some
people, consumption of any amount of nicotine may lead to withdrawal
symptoms and nicotine dependence. There are certain features which
indicate that a person is suffering from nicotine dependence. These
include
- Inability to quit smoking: despite one or more attempts one fail to quit smoking
- Having the withdrawal symptoms when quitting smoking is attempted: any attempt to stop smoking leads to withdrawal symptoms characterized by irritability, altered mood, increased anxiety, restlessness, depression, frustration, anger, increase in appetite, poor concentrating ability, diarrhea, constipation, inability to sleep (insomnia) etc.
- Continuing smoking despite several health related problems like lung, heart diseases, etc.
- Preferring smoking than other recreational activities. Avoidance of places where smoking is not allowed like smoke free restaurants, decreased mixing with friends or relatives who have quit smoking etc.
